Student Life
Student life in Sixth Form is vibrant and active. As well as excellent academic standards and teaching, we encourage students to be involved in all aspects of school life and to take part in as many enrichment activities as they can. This page gives a snapshot of some of the activities that YDA Sixth Form students participate in.
Canolfan y Chweched
We are very proud of our Sixth Form centre, fully refurbished in September 2023, it provides spaces for students to study quietly, relax and chat as well as a fully-stocked university prospectus library and a growing academic library. We also benefit from Sixth Form only toilet facilities and two fully-equipped computer suites as well as two chrome-book trolleys. Sixth Form students also organise and run their own tuck shop from the Canolfan.
School leadership
The Sixth Form take a significant responsibility for leadership within the school. Every year 10 students are elected as members of the school Senedd and two of these appointed through a rigorous interview process as Head Prefects.
The Senedd run all aspects of the school leadership programme including captaining the houses, leading on key areas, speaking in assemblies, attending Governors meetings and representing the school.
Charity & Fundraising
Sixth Form students make a significant contribution to school charity events, organising events for Children in Need and Comic Relief as well as for local charities, such as Joseph's Smile. Every year four charities are selected as nominated house charities, more details about this can be found here.
Future Planning and Pastoral Sessions
Throughout the year we have a wide range of speakers on topics such as careers, UCAS, Student Finance, safe driving, first aid as well as annual mock interviews for all students.
Arts & Drama
Sixth Form students run the annual Eisteddfod in school, organising teams, competitors and events. They lead all aspects of the Eisteddfod and it becomes a very competitive part of the last term of the year!
Sixth Form students also support with technical aspects of school productions and regularly take lead roles within them!
Sports
At Ysgol Dyffryn Aman we are proud of our Rugby Academy. Students who are members of the WRU Academy take part in a daily training and fitness programme and represent the school in matches.
Sixth Form students also take part in (and often lead) the school hockey, football, cricket and netball first teams and form the core of the school ski racing team. They also take a leadership role in coaching younger students.
Members of Sixth Form have recently planned, organised, set-up and coached the first girls' cricket hardball teams.
Competitions
Students in Sixth Form take part in regular academic competitions. This includes competitions in arts, creative writing and the annual Engineering competition at which we have had considerable success over recent years.
Educational & Activity Visits
Throughout the year we participate in a number of educational visits. There include annual university visits to Cardiff Met University, Swansea University and Oxford University as well as visits to the UCAS fairs and our annual Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff.
One of the highlights for many students is the annual Senior Ski Trip which has seen us visit Italy, Austria and Norway over the last few years!
